Social campaign “Attention on the road!” started in regions!

30 July 2020

The social campaign is aimed at preventing accidents associated with violation of traffic rules due to the distraction of drivers and pedestrians. The Volgograd Region has become a first region for the social campaign "Attention on the road!"

Regional press conference included high level speakers: Alexander Stepanov - interim head of the traffic police department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Volgograd region, Valentina Kulbitskaya - director of project work of the NGO Road safety Russia, Nikolai Yanshin - chairman of the committee of transport and road facilities of Volgograd region, Elena Logoido - First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Education, Science and Youth Policy of the Volgograd Region. The event was also attended by journalists, representatives of the expert community and public organizations.

Drivers’ and pedestrians’ distraction on the road is one of the key risk factors for road accidents. The social campaign aims to explain how distraction on the road can threaten both drivers and pedestrians. Organizers of the campaign "Attention on the road!" and the experts believe that in order to reduce the number of accidents, it is necessary to change the mind set of all road users, to change the attitude of society towards this problem.

“The problem of distraction, unlike other causes of road accidents, does not seem clear, understandable and unconditional. There is a negative attitude in society regarding such offenses as driving while intoxicated, and very few people understand that it is unacceptable to be distracted on the road. Therefore, explanatory work should be carried out with all road users”, - Valentina Kulbitskaya explained the essence of the social campaign. She noted that according to the results of sociological research, most often people perceive this problem in relation to other road users, without applying it to themselves. 70% of drivers are confident that they have good control of their car, even if distracted by external factors. “People are sure that they are capable of driving a car and talking on the phone at the same time, or crossing the street listening to music through headphones,” the expert noted. "By the way, many people don't even realize that music is also a distraction."

The campaign "Attention on the road!" developed creative tools that are used to convey important points related to distraction - information stands, BTL activities, a film in the stand-up genre, video performances for children and interactive lectures for adults. At the press conference, social videos revealing the problem were shown.

In the Volgograd Region, 1,045 road accidents were recorded in the first half of 2020, which is 7.3% less than the same period last year. However, along with this, there is an increase in the number of fatalities on the roads. During this period, the number of victims amounted to 112 people, which is 15.5% higher than in 2019. “Drivers are distracted by gadgets, music, advertising. And all this leads to tragedies. We identify such road users, conduct preventive conversations, and I hope that within the framework of this project we will achieve good results, ” - said Alexander Stepanov.

“We all set a goal to teach children how to behave on the street. Various events, contests, thematic platforms are also associated with this. But we understand that if a child died on the road, it means that these measures are not enough, - said Elena Logoido. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the campaign and to send teachers for trainings.”

An important factor affecting road safety is the state of the road infrastructure. “The quality of the roads is improving,” said Nikolay Yanshin. - Pedestrian crossings are also being put in order. But we must admit that financial investments in the road sector, alas, do not bring results in terms of reducing accidents. The roads are getting better, the speed is increasing - and the number of accidents is growing. New methods of prevention are needed, it is necessary to change the consciousness of citizens and pay more attention to raising children. These are future drivers, they should realize from childhood that obeyance to the traffic rules must be strict. "

The social campaign in the Volgograd region will last until July 27, events with children - until the end of summer. During this time, the organizers and activists of the social campaign will hold more than two hundred events in the Volgograd Region at busy intersections, gas stations, transport companies, driving schools and other locations. Pedestrians, present and future drivers, children, parents, teachers will take part in lectures, seminars, trainings, interactive games. The organizers of the social campaign invite everyone to take part in the campaign and once again remind themselves and their families about safe behavior on the road.

Concluding the press conference, the participants noted that the nation wide social campaign "Attention on the Road!" will become an important element in the formation of safe behavior on the roads. Campaign activities will also be implemented in the following regions: Smolensk, Ryazan, Ulyanovsk, Kurgan, Irkutsk, Amur, Kemerovo and Novosibirsk, the republics of Udmurtia and Kalmykia, as well as Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Altai and Primorsky Krai.
