Child projects 2015 by Road Safety Russia

11 January 2016

In 2015, Road Safety Russia organized and participated in dozens of projects aimed at improving child road safety. Most of the campaigns were held on the federal level, and engaged parents, medical officers, teachers, representatives of the authorities, and, of course, the children. We tried to remember the most important projects related to child safety and share the with you.

Play It Safe – trainings for new and soon-to-be mothers at the Federal State Budget Institution "Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology"

Accidents are often caused by simple mistakes that could have been avoided. Play It Safe – new joint project by the State Road Traffic Inspectorate, Ministry of Health and Road Safety Russia – can help you learn more about child safety. First initiative within the project involved informational trainings for future and new parents in perinatal centers in Russia, with the key topic being proper child transportation. After all, road accidents rank first in the list of death and injury causes among children under 14.

Trainings has been held for new and future mothers and contained information on safest ways of transporting a child by car. Special attention has been paid to the criteria by which you should choose a car seat, its mounting, installation and location particularities, and infant psychology, as newborns rarely prefer anything to their mother’s arms in their first days of life, so their transportation has its own subtleties.

In 2015, more than 603 mothers participated in the trainings. For 95% of them, the trainings presented new and useful information, 77% of them noted that they will transport their children exclusively in child car seats.

Safety Forecast

Safety Forecast – a joint campaign by the Russian Association of Motor Insurers, Road Safety Russia, and the State Road Traffic Inspectorate at the Ministry of Interior – has engaged many Russian regions from the first months of 2015. Target audience of the campaign includes not only adult drivers and pedestrians, but children as well. Two cartoon-like characters have been created solely for children – as heroes of a children play “Let’s Be Safe In Spring”. Together with road traffic inspectors, Lighter (“Svetik” in Russian, a lovable guy helping kids to learn something new about weather) and Tempest (“Nepogodka” in Russian, a girl full of mischief trying to get Lighter in trouble) taught classes on road safety for primary school and kindergarten students in 11 Russian regions. These classes were mainly focused on road safety measures under different weather conditions.

By The Rules Campaign

The By The Rules campaign engaged citizens of Smolensk, Kaluga, and Vladimir regions in interactive trainings and simulations aimed to show the consequences and the costs of traffic rules violations.

The campaign covers four topics representing the main causes of road accidents: speeding, failure to use child restraint systems, violation of traffic rules by pedestrians, and failure to ise safety belts. Until the end of 2015, Vladimir, Kaluga, and Smolensk regions will host interactive classes in kindergartens, schools, universities, and driving schools.

Moreover, the campaign included seminars on child transportation held at maternity hospitals and perinatal centers in Vladimir, Kaluga, and Smolensk regions. Right now, the seminars are over; however, all guidance and educational materials are available in all regions-participants for future self-efficient seminars. Informational posters covering the topic of child transportation will be displayed in 120 medical institutions in Smolensk, Kaluga, and Vladimir regions.

Childs Rights to Safety

Road Safety Russia developed and promoted the Child’s Rights to Safety initiative. The key element of the initiative is the Child’s Rights Card similar to driver’s license card. The back of the Card contains seven rights that should be available to every child: safe transportation in child safety seats; safety and support when travelling by bus; reflective elements during night-time transportation; safety and helmets when travelling by two-wheel transport; safe road infrastructure; timely education on traffic rules; abidance by traffic rules by all road users.

We asked parents to print out these Cards and present them to their children. Child’s Rights Cards were distributed by Road Safety Russia at all our events engaging parents and their children.

Junior Campus

Junior Campus children educational project, carried out jointly by BMW and Road Safety Russia, helps children to learn more about rules of transportation in the city and main rules of behavior on the road.  Under the care of highly qualified teachers, kids receive lessons on the most common dangerous situations that can be potentially harmful for pedestrians and bikers; they are taught to be careful on the road and to think about their safety. So far, road safety rules and skills within the project have been taught to more than 14,000 children.

This year, for the first time in the history of the Safe Wheel competition at the All-Russian Children's Center Orlyonok, the competition welcomed a team of hearing-impaired children from the Junior Campus project. In 2015, the Safe Wheel has marked its 40-year anniversary, but until now, there hasn’t been any physically challenged teams in the competition. Junior Campus organizers has decided to prove that traffic rules are there for all, and that hearing-impaired children are capable of participating in such competitions.

According to the RSRussia president Natalia Agre, “One of the most important questions in the road safety field is child safety and accessibility of education on traffic and safety rules from an early age. Right to safety is entitled to all children, regardless their social status or physical appearance. We hope that this initiative on engaging children’s teams with disabilities in the All-Russian competition will receive the support of related ministries and offices and that, starting next year, such teams will compete alongside others. Today we change the Safe Wheel history”.

The UN Child Declaration for Road Safety

The Third UN Global Road Safety Week was focused on child road safety, aiming to draw attention to the urgency of child safety issue and to initiate measures dedicated to the improvement of the current situation. That idea was represented in the Child Declaration for Road Safety, drafted in November 2014. The Declaration was noticeable for the fact that it was based not only on expert counsel, but on children’s opinion as well – in context of the campaign children had been asked what frightened them on the road the most, what questions remained unanswered or unclear. Declaration development was based on the understanding of the main underlying causes of road accidents involving children, and on the analysis of a child’s mind.

Road Safety Russia president, Natalia Agre, and our RSRussia team were promoting the Declaration via all possible media channels, and were urging people to pay their attention to problems of child road safety.

How not to get hit by a car

To the 1st of September, we’ve created a pedestrian safety infographic and posted it on our web resources. The infographics is a simple but effective instruction for children and their parents, containing advice on safe and responsible road behavior. We asked parents to print it out and show it to their children.

The infographics can be considered successful, as it was actively reposted on social media.

The Bravery Box

The Gift of Life foundation aims to help oncology patients. The foundation team has started the Bravery Box initiative – a special box with toys in oncology rooms. Children that come to hospitals for catheter or bandage change, paracentesis, or any other painful or stressful procedures, can now get a small but much needed present for their bravery.

Road Safety Russia actively supported this action by the Gift Of Life Foundation. RSRussia participated in gift donation and urged the public to join us in this initiative.
