Dutch company announced a plan to build roads made of plastic

29 July 2015

Dutch construction company VolkerWessels proposed a plan to replace worn out asphalt roads in the USA with new PlasticRoad ones, told Discovery News.

According to the company, a road fashioned out of recycled plastic instead of asphalt or concrete will be three times more durable and will be able to survive temperatures as low as -40 degrees and as hign as 80 degrees Celsius.

PlasticRoad project also provides a series of innovative advantages, such as power generation, quiet road surfaces, heated roads and modular construction. Moreover, roads can be built in weeks instead of months by using sections prefabbed in a factory and transported where they are needed. In addition, they are virtually maintenance free, which would reduce the construction time and ease traffic. The design also leaves room for hollow space below the surface, making it possible to lay cables and pipelines and use it for rainwater.

New roads are even environmentally friendly - unlike plastic, asphalt is responsible for 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year and 2 percent of all road transport emissions.

Right now the company is actively looking for investors, with the city of Rotterdam (Netherlands) considering serving as a pilot for the project.
