Millions of lights for millions of lives

15 November 2013

On the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, “Road Safety Russia” NGO and “Motocitizen” call attention to remember all people killed in car crashes and take part in the campaign “Millions of lights for millions of lives”. On the 17th of November at 4 p.m. sharp all concerned automobilists, obeying traffic regulations, will turn on hazard warning lights to pay tribute to road traffic victims. Organizers offer to join the campaign across Russia and in such a way attract attention to present global disaster – mortality on the score of road accidents. The campaign will take place for the second time, similar campaign was held last year.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is commemorated on the third Sunday of November according to the Resolution of the General Assembly. The idea belongs to RoadPeace – the British national charity for road crash victims, which has been commemorated the date since 1993 (It was the most tragic year in Europe – almost 50 thousand people were killed on the roads).

That day we urge citizens to recall all the people killed in car crashes. We stopped paying attention when we hear news about another traffic accident – road war turned into a common thing. Every day more than 3400 people are killed in road accidents, and tens of thousands become disabled for life. These accidents cause innumerable damage to the humanity both from demographic and economic points of view.

According to the figures, provided by the State Road Traffic Inspectorate at the Ministry of Interior of Russia, during the first 10 months of this year more than 21 thousand people were killed and more than 212 thousand injured in road accidents in Russia. Almost 90% of all accidents were caused by the blatant violating of traffic rules by the drivers. The most frequent causes of road accidents are exceeding speed limits, driving on the opposite lane and violating the rules of crossing intersections.

The majority of road accident victims are young people, who could have lived a long and full life. The problem of road traffic traumatism concerns everyone: we see road accidents everyday on the roads, in the news and on TV. What’s more, each of us was participating in an accident once in life or knows at least one person, who had a road accident.

Comprehensive work on road safety with its legislative, infrastructural and advocacy components is important and in future it will help to bring up decent drivers, who will not peril their and other people’s lives. But unfortunately it will not revive people, lost in this war.

On 17 November at 4 p.m., let’s turn on the hazard warning lights for 1 minute. Let’s commemorate the victims of road accidents.
