Traffic Policemen to Give a Traffic Safety Lesson to Future Moms

18 November 2011

A lesson on road traffic safety was held in maternity hospital and perinatal center in the city of Chita.

Traffic policemen informed future mothers that carrying children in cars without car seats is extremely risky; policemen explained what seats are suitable for newborns and demonstrated how to use the restraining harnesses.

- Children remain safe inside the cradle and the risk of getting injured during a motor vehicle accident is reduced by a factor of two; remaining on mother's arms young passengers are exposed to fatal risk - said Julia Babkina, the inspector to promote safety issues in Chita traffic police (UGIBDD).

- During collision of cars the child's weight increases 30 times.

Even if a mother is holding her baby in her arms, she cannot resist the force in excess of one hundred kilos.

The baby can either catapult out of the car, or the mother will crush the baby by her weight.

Safety lesson in Perinatal Center was conducted by the traffic police within the framework of the all-Russian social campaign "Car Seat to Every Child".

The objective of this massive campaign conducted throughout the country is to draw attention of parents to the issue transporting young passengers in cars. It is forbidden in Russia, to transport children under 12 in cars without restraints. Violation is penalized by fine of 500 rubles. Unfortunately, too few parents and drivers give a thought to the safety of children and use car seats. This reason brought about an increase in the number of children  injured and killed in the traffic accidents in recent years.
The task of the campaign "Car Seat to Every Child" is to convey to parents that car seats protect 70% children from sustaining injuries in a car accidents. Car seats should be always used regardless of the duration of the trip and availability of companion.
